As part of the HCA Virginia Physicians network, we have been providing high-quality surgical care in the Richmond community for more than 35 years. Our goal is that patients feel informed about care before, during and after their procedure.

Advanced surgical care in Henrico County

Our surgeons provide a wide range of surgical procedures, offering laparoscopic and robotic surgery options whenever possible. With these types of surgery, patients benefit from faster recovery times and less pain and scarring.

Breast care

Our breast care team—founded by George Knaysi, MD—is dedicated to offering exceptional care and advanced procedures for the treatment of breast disease. As part of this, we perform breast surgeries at Henrico Doctors' Hospital, an American College of Surgeons Comprehensive Community Cancer Center and American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. It is also certified by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).

Our partnership with Henrico Doctors' Hospital enables us to offer patient-centered treatments for breast diseases, including breast cancer. It also allows our surgeons to work closely with other specialists, including:

  • Breast radiologists
  • Medical oncologists
  • Nurse navigators
  • Pathologists
  • Radiation oncologists

Breast ultrasound

For women with dense breast tissue, we offer specialized 3D ultrasound technology. This comfortably and quickly provides advanced imaging procedures. Each exam takes approximately 15 minutes. They are generally performed after your annual mammogram.

Breast cancer education support groups and classes

When it comes to breast cancer, support is important, which is why we offer additional resources for our patients.

Support groups

Join one of our Breast Cancer Support Groups at Henrico Doctors' Hospital to meet and participate in discussions with other people affected by breast cancer. These groups provide support—through education and shared personal experiences—to other women experiencing breast cancer.

Surgery preparation class

The weekly Preoperative Breast Surgery Class at Henrico Doctors' Hospital is designed to prepare patients and their caregivers for an upcoming lumpectomy or mastectomy (with or without reconstruction). Taught by both an oncology-certified nurse and an oncology clinical social worker, the class helps participants move through surgery and recovery by offering emotional and practical resources and tips.

GERD care

GERD is a gastrointestinal disturbance that occurs when contents in the stomach flow upwards into the esophagus. The lower esophageal sphincter, a muscle in the lower esophagus, normally acts as a barrier. However, when the muscle becomes weak, acid and bile from the stomach are not stopped from flowing into the esophagus.

For some people, heartburn and reflux can lead to esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus or esophageal stricture. If not treated, it may also lead to esophageal cancer.

Treatments we offer

Led by Clifford Smith, MD, our heartburn and reflux team specializes in treating patients with GERD. We use advanced technology and surgical techniques to ensure patients find relief from their reflux symptoms. Surgeries and treatments are performed at the Heartburn and Reflux Center of Richmond at Henrico Doctors' Hospital.

We specialize in the following procedures:

  • Heller myotomy for achalasia
  • Magnetic reflux device insertion
  • Minimally invasive GERD treatments
  • Nissen fundoplication
  • Paraesophageal hernia repair
